After a dog bite or other possible rabies exposure, three important components of prevention are proper wound first aid, rabies vaccination and, when indicated, rabies immunoglobulin (RIG).
1. First Aid Is the First Important Step
Immediately after a bite or scratch, wash and flush the wound thoroughly with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes. This is an important first step because it helps remove the virus from the site of exposure. An iodine-containing antiseptic such as povidone-iodine may also be used after thorough washing
2. Rabies Vaccine
The second important step is rabies vaccination.
Depending on the type of exposure, a healthcare professional will determine whether rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is required and which vaccination schedule is appropriate.WHO recommends immediate vaccination for Category II and Category III exposures.
3. What Is Rabies Immunoglobulin?
Many people know about the rabies vaccine but may not know about Rabies Immunoglobulin (RIG).
RIG is recommended for Category III exposures, such as bites or scratches that break the skin, wounds that bleed after an animal bite or scratch, saliva from a potentially rabid animal coming into contact with broken skin, or saliva entering the eyes, mouth or other mucous membranes.
In these situations, prompt medical evaluation is essential to determine the appropriate rabies post-exposure treatment.
